167 MPH Rc Car - Custom Built by Tim Smith Racing

Have you ever heard of an rc car that can go close to 170mph? Well according to an on board data logger and Tim Smith Racing it has been done. This car is a custom build and the owner builds his own motors as well. It's a good thing nobody was standing in the way when the right front wheel failed! That would put you on crutches for a while for sure!

Enjoy this video, it's pretty amazing!

Mind Controlled Drone Anyone?

Last week scientists at The University of Minnesota showed the world that thought control aircraft are now possible. Using a modified AR Drone and the newly developed "Brain Computer Interface" the team has conducted several successful tests using nothing more than thoughts to control the direction of the aircraft.

Thought controlled devices have been in development for some time, and I remember a few years ago Mattel Toys released a popular thought controlled game called Mindflex. I'm really excited about this new technology because I think it will eventually lead to some life changing medical devices for the disabled.

Brain controlled model aircraft are probably a little ways out from the hobbyist market though. Personally I would rather fly with radio control. What would happen if your cell phone rang or you had some other distraction while flying? Most likely a bad crash!

Still a thought controlled drone is a very cool idea. The video below gives you a complete briefing of the technology and you can see it in action there.

The full original press release for the Mind Controlled AR Drone is here.

DJI H3-2D Zenmuse GoPro Gimbal Take Cinematic Video With Your DJI Phantom

DJI H3-2D Zenmuse GoPro Gimbal- Coming Soon!

The DJI H3-2D Gimbal for Go Pro Hero 3 is going to be amazing to say the least! Allowing owners of the DJI Phantom to get cinematic quality video with it. We are happy to announce that we are now taking orders for this much anticipated gimbal.  It is due to start shipping to customers around the end of June (shipments are almost always later than advertised from suppliers) hopefully.

What's the big deal about this Gimbal? DJI Phantom owners can already get some pretty stunning footage from the air with the stock camera mount. However, this new gimbal is going to auto stabilize the camera. In other words it will keep the camera level regardless if your Phantom is shaking in turbulence (quite common in the wind) or responding to pilot input. This results in very stable video without the telltale shakes and turns of the beginner photographer. The other main feature of the H3-2D is that you can tilt the camera in flight from the stock radio transmitter! This allows you to adjust the camera angle for getting all of those great shots from the air.

For the aspiring aerial photographer or the hobbyist who just wants to get some cool air to ground or air to air shots this is going to be a must have product for you.

Although this product has not been officially released it should be starting to ship soon. You can reserve one now for only a $1 on our website.  We still don't know what the price is going to be on this yet, but we will inform customers as soon as we know and also update our website.

Here are two video demonstrations of the H3-2D gimbal. Keep in mind these were shot with a prototype unit. The production unit will no doubt be even better.

We can't wait to get ours to shoot some test video. Once we can do that we'll have a full update and more information here on our blog.

In the meantime here is the current information from DJI as of the time of writing this entry:

The DJI Zenmuse H3-2D Gimbal is another milestone in gimbal innovation, which is designed for the GoPro Hero3. With its high precision, high stability, lightweight, plug and play features, it is widely used in film and television productions, advertising aerial photography, etc. Even if the aircraft is in high-speed flight, it can still stabilize and control the GoPro camera precisely with the highest stability. The precision of control angle is within the range of ±0.08°, so picture or video output can reach the best quality.
DJI H3-2D Zenmuse 2-axis Gimbal for GoPro will be available soon. The 2-axis version supports pitch and roll stabilization control.

FEATURES
  • 2-AXIS Professional Gimbal With High Performance;
  • Easy to install, Plug and Play;
  • Customized for GoPro Hero3;
  • Compatible with DJI flight control systems;
  • The Core Technology is inherited from the Zenmuse Z15;
  • Independent IMU module;
  • Extremely light weight with solid mechanical design;
  • Ideal Choice for Phantom and Flame Wheel;
  • Online Upgrade Support;

Domino's Pizza "Domicopter" Drone Pizza Delivery - Drones could be delivering food and goods to your front yard soon!

Well, we've been following the "Drone" revolution for a while now. There are no doubt hundreds of uses for drones both fixed wing and multi-rotor.  Several months ago we were discussing around the office here that we can all see a time when Drones might deliver pizza, store goods, and even auto parts direct to your front door. Perhaps they will be used in the medical field to deliver life saving supplies quickly, or even a first responder kit to patients.

Imagine if you could order a product online, and have it delivered the same day to your front yard via drone! Amazon.com and a few other large companies have been testing same day deliveries with trucks in major cities for some time now. A drone could bring your package quickly and directly to your location....

However, currently the FAA says no to the commercial use of drones at all (you can fly for hobby, testing and development and non commerce purposes though). I spoke to the FAA about this a few months back and they say they are adopting new rules regarding the use of drones, but right now it's on the drawing board.

The use of "Drones" brings up a few questions in my mind. Even though I fully support the use of them for commercial purposes, I don't think I would want cargo flights buzzing over my house, pets, children, and vehicles would you? If there were any malfunction it could damage your property or even worse someone could get hurt. I think the use of fail safes and redundant systems and safe flight routes that avoid people and property will be required.

There is also the possibility of theft. Drones could easily become a target for someone wanting to steal the cargo they are carrying (or the drone itself). These are all things that will have to be figured out before we see them delivering goods on a regular basis.

The Domino's Pizza Domicopter demonstration shows us that the technology is already here to deliver pizza and other goods right to your front door. Using a modified Steadidrone Eight Octocopter the test crew was able to successfully deliver a pizza to a waiting "test customer" recently.

For me personally, I'm excited to see what the future of drones will bring to us.

Ferguson Elementary School Model Rocket Launch

Posted 6-5-13 by Matt

This week I had the pleasure of attending a rocket launch at Ferguson Elementary School here in Klamath Falls. We had supplied the school with the rockets for the class, and I thought it would be really cool to bring the DJI Phantom Quadcopter with me and attempt to film the launches from the air. I was able to get some pretty cool photos of the launch and the kids enjoyed it a lot! A big shout out to Ferguson Elementary School! Thanks for the invite.
